What does an executive or leadership coach do?
An executive coach works one-on-one with a leader on how they make decisions, communicate, lead a team and handle pressure. Leadership trainers and corporate trainers teach those skills to groups, often inside a company program. Keynote speakers bring one clear message to an event. Career coaches help individuals choose a direction, change roles, negotiate and get hired.
The buyer is often not the person being coached. When a company pays, the agreement should say who sets the goals, what gets reported back, and what stays confidential.
How do you choose the right executive coach or trainer?
Look for experience at your level. Coaching a first-time manager and coaching a CEO are different jobs. Ask how they measure progress, how long a typical engagement runs, and whether they have held a leadership role themselves or only coached it.
Coaching credentials exist, such as those from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), but they are not required. If a credential matters to you, ask which one and verify it with the issuing body. For speakers, ask for a full recording of a recent talk, not a highlight reel.
