What does a life, relationship or faith-based coach do?

A life coach helps you get clear on what you want and take steps toward it, in work, health, relationships or purpose. Mindset and personal development coaches work on beliefs, habits and confidence. Relationship and marriage coaches help couples and individuals communicate and rebuild trust. Parenting coaches support families through specific stages and challenges. Faith-based coaches and ministry trainers bring this work together with a Christian or other faith perspective.

Coaching looks forward and focuses on action. It is not therapy. Trauma, depression, addiction or abuse call for a licensed therapist or counselor, and a good coach will tell you so.

How do you choose a life or relationship coach?

Look for training you can check, such as an International Coaching Federation (ICF) credential, experience with situations like yours, and a clear process: how many sessions, what happens between them, and how you will know it is working. A free introductory call is common and lets you judge the fit.

Because these sessions involve personal and often sensitive information, read the privacy policy before you start. Verification requires every member to publish one.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • What training they did, and whether any of it was assessed by anyone
  • How they decide someone needs a therapist rather than a coach
  • Where your session notes are stored, and for how long

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a life coach and a therapist?

A therapist is a licensed mental health professional who can assess and treat conditions such as anxiety, depression and trauma. A life coach helps people who are generally well to set goals and make changes. Coaching is not a substitute for therapy.

What does a Christian or faith-based life coach do?

A faith-based coach uses the same coaching methods as any life coach, combined with the client's faith: prayer, scripture and values-based decisions. Ask how they integrate faith in sessions so you know what to expect.

Can a relationship coach help save a marriage?

A relationship or marriage coach can help couples communicate, rebuild trust and make changes together. Where there is abuse, addiction or serious mental health concerns, a licensed marriage and family therapist is the right first step.

How do I know a life coach is legitimate?

Check that a real, identifiable person stands behind the business, that their refund terms and privacy policy are published, and what training they have. A KBS verification record confirms identity, domain control and published policies.

What does verification mean?

KBS checks three things: the identity of the person behind the business, control of the domain they claim, and that a refund policy, terms of service and a working support contact are published and reachable. Those checks are re-run while a membership is active.

It is not a rating and not a recommendation. Verification says nothing about service quality or what results anyone will get.
